Tips for Shopping at Aldi

In my book, Instant Bargains: 600+ Ways to Shrink Your Grocery Bill and Eat Well for Less, I give readers the run-down on where to shop for grocery bargains. One of my favorite places to shop is Aldi, no-frills grocery store that originated in Germany and opened up its first U.S. store in 1976. They're able to offer customers low prices by only stocking a limited assortment of goods (Aldi only stocks about 1,000 products compared to over 25,000 of the typically grocery store). I found that when I compared Aldi to other grocery chains (including Walmart), I could save 18% on my overall grocery bill. If you're accustomed to spending $500 a month on groceries, that adds up to nearly $1000 per year.
Five things you'll need to know before you go:
1. Aldi only accepts cash and debit cards. Leave the credit cards at home.
2. You will pay a quarter to "rent" a cart, which you get back when you return the cart to its proper place.
3. You'll need to bring your own bags, or be prepared to buy them there.
4. You won't find everything you need. Aldi keeps its costs down by only stocking the food items with the highest turnover rate.
5. Aldi does not accept coupons.
Aldi has a dedicated following on Mommysavers.com as well. Here are some related discussion topics:

Is Aldi worth the trip?
