Tips for Shopping Coach Factory Stores + Coupon

Who says you can't enjoy luxury on a budget? I know some of you simply don't understand the allure of Coach, or any other designer handbag for that matter, and I get where you're coming from (pssst!  this post is for you). However, this post is geared towards those of you who do, and a few things I've learned about what to look for when searching for bargains.

Coach Factory Stores basically stock two kinds of merchandise: items that had been in full-price retails stores prior seasons and are getting clearanced out, or items that are created specifically for the outlets. The items created specifically for the outlets take up the vast majority of floor space there. They are labeled with an "F" in the serial number.

The items created specifically for the outlets are based on best-selling full-price Coach bags. They're all made with the same quality of materials as full-price Coach. But, they often don't have the same amount of detail work such as hardware, stitching, closures, etc. Because of that difference, when you pick them up they often feel lighter.

The best way to tell which bags had previously been in retail boutiques is to ask an associate. I did notice a couple things: They didn't have the "F" in the serial number, but had a target sign stamped on it instead. Also, the prices on the boutique merchandise tended to be a little higher. It was 30-40% off while most of the factory merchandise was 50% off.

Think there's nothing but spendy, overpriced merchandise in the Coach stores? Think again! You can often pick up cute accessories for under $30 (even less after coupon savings). They make great gifts for babysitters, sisters, moms, and teen daughters.

Now through March 21st, save 20-30% on your outlet purchase. Here's a link to print the coupon. Valid 3/17/10 - 3/21/10.

St. Patrick's Day Grocery Bargains

Grocery bargains revolve around holidays and special events, and this week is a good one! All those yummy Irish foods like corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes are going to be promoted as loss-leaders. If you've never prepared a corned beef brisket, it's simple and SO YUMMY. Leftovers taste great in sandwiches, too.
Here's how:  Place the brisket in a large Dutch oven. Pour a 12-ounce bottle or can of beer over the beef, to use as a simmeriing liquid. Add 3-4 cloves of garlic, whole, peppercorns and a bay leaf. Simmer for 3 hours on low. Cook vegetables like carrots, cabbage and potatoes in the remaining liquid until tender. Let the brisket rest for 10 minutes then slice or shred to serve.

Your search for bargains can be after the holiday itself. Look for meat to get reduced for quick sale right after the holiday passes, and stock up for your freezer.
Easter bargains are next, so be on the lookout for ham, eggs and other holiday favorites.

Target Launches First-Ever Scannable Mobile Coupon Program

MINNEAPOLIS (March 10, 2010) – Target is the first national retailer to offer a scannable mobile coupon program that allows guests to receive exclusive offers directly on their mobile phones. Coupons are redeemed by scanning a barcode on the phone at checkout.

“At Target, we know that mobile phones are an integral part of our guests’ lives, and mobile coupons are just another way we’re providing convenient, on-the-go shopping solutions,” said Steve Eastman, president of Target.com.
Guests can opt-in to the program on their PC at Target.com/mobile, on their phone at m.target.com or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET). After opt-in, guests receive a text message with a link to a mobile Web page that contains multiple offers, all accessible through a single barcode. Offers are single use and expire on the date listed.

Target’s point-of-sale scanning technology makes mobile coupons possible, and Target is the first major retailer with the ability to scan mobile barcodes in all of its stores. A leader in mobile retail, Target continues to offer innovative mobile solutions for guests. In addition to using the new mobile coupons, Target guests can access their Target Mobile GiftCards, view online assortments, check product availability and store locations, manage their Target gift registry and lists, browse the weekly ad, and receive text and e-mail notifications of great deals – all via their mobile phones.

Tips for Shopping at Aldi

In my book, Instant Bargains: 600+ Ways to Shrink Your Grocery Bill and Eat Well for Less, I give readers the run-down on where to shop for grocery bargains. One of my favorite places to shop is Aldi, no-frills grocery store that originated in Germany and opened up its first U.S. store in 1976. They're able to offer customers low prices by only stocking a limited assortment of goods (Aldi only stocks about 1,000 products compared to over 25,000 of the typically grocery store). I found that when I compared Aldi to other grocery chains (including Walmart), I could save 18% on my overall grocery bill. If you're accustomed to spending $500 a month on groceries, that adds up to nearly $1000 per year.

Five things you'll need to know before you go:
1. Aldi only accepts cash and debit cards. Leave the credit cards at home.
2. You will pay a quarter to "rent" a cart, which you get back when you return the cart to its proper place.
3. You'll need to bring your own bags, or be prepared to buy them there.
4. You won't find everything you need. Aldi keeps its costs down by only stocking the food items with the highest turnover rate.
5. Aldi does not accept coupons.

Aldi has a dedicated following on Mommysavers.com as well. Here are some related discussion topics:
What do you think of Aldi's produce, meat and dairy?
What are your favorite convenience foods at Aldi?
Is Aldi worth the trip?
Just how cheap is Aldi?

Free (and Frugal) Music Download Sources

Are you craving some new tunes, but are strapped for cash? The web is full of great .mp3 files to refresh your playlists on a regular basis without breaking the bank. In fact, many sites offer them completely free of charge. These freebies are a great way for new and upcoming bands to get their name out there, and a fun yet frugal way for you to fill your iPod.

While you think many of these are just fly-by-night bands you'll never hear from again -- think again. One of my favorite freebies from last summer was Owl City's Fireflies, which ended up as one of the top songs of 2009. You never know -- in your search for freebies you may just download the next big hit! Here are some of my favorite sources for free .mp3s:

1. Amazon.com
Not only does Amazon have a huge selection of free songs within their digital downloads department, they offer great everyday prices on popular .mp3s. Plus, they have a selection of albums on sale for $5 from popular performers like Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, and The Taylor Swift.

2. iTunes
iTunes is a great source for any iPod download, but if you're not taking advantage of their freebies, you're missing out. iTunes regularly runs a "Single of the Week" promo on their marketplace homepage. Additionally, if you become a fan of iTunes on Facebook you'll get some great freebies - including the Starbucks Sampler featuring 20 songs from artists such as Sting, Moby, Iron & Wine, Metric and more. Simply become an iTunes fan on Facebook and follow instructions.

3. Walmart.com
When iTunes top 100 is filled with $1.29 tracks, many of them can be found on Walmart.com for just $.94. If you download a lot of music, that savings can definitelyadd up. Plus, Walmart has a wide selection of .mp3s for just $.64. They also offer a free track of the week in their "Features and Specials" department.

4. MTV
MTV.com offers a small selection of freebies from up-and-coming bands on a regular basis. Check back regularly to see what's new (and free!).

Target's Big Save

In order to compete with Warehouse giants Sam's Club and Costco, Target stores are devoting their seasonal department to bulk purchase items for the next six weeks. This is the area in the store where you'll typically find the Back-to-School supplies and Christmas goodies. For the past few years, they've devoted that space to their Global Market products in January. This year, they're going the frugal route.

I was there this week and noticed it. There was a group of college girls there giddy with excitement over the prices and stocking up for their apartment. I didn't know about the "treasure hunt" items, otherwise I may have given it a closer look.

"Target is following Costco's lead, and is interspersing treasure hunt items in its Great Save. In roughly 1,000 of its stores, the retailer will sell goods from designers not typically offered, such as polo shirts from Ralph Lauren and T-shirts by Calvin Klein."
